Women in UX May - Summary by Mags Hanley

The May 2021 Women in UX meetup was an interactive session hosted by Sarah Stokes and Karina Smith, and sponsored by Domain

Sarah and Karina led a group of 60 women though an exercise on re-imagining their life and career. It was incredibly personal and empowering, with each attendee doing her own work on what is important in her life and finding opportunities from those priorities.

The first exercise was a mind mapping exercise, using divergent thinking to expand out all the parts of our lives from work, friends, hobbies and passions. My mind map moved between singing, education, my coaching work, being with family and strength training.

We then looked at how we could combine different aspects of our passions to explore new opportunities. Taking three different points from the mind map, we were encouraged to create as many combinations as possible.

The one that stuck with me was education, family and sketching. My niece and I spent one day over the previous holidays, sketching, prototyping and making; I thought that I could take my love of education into teaching children how to sketch and prototype before they start making their newest projects.

The attendees then got into groups to discuss and share their ideas and insights. As well as these exercises, Sarah and Karina shared a number of resources to help assess your life to move forward.

Thank you to Domain, Sarah and Karina for sharing your expertise and showing us alternative ways to imagine our lives.
