Theme: Contributions of Design Research in contemporary design

Design research supports the transformation of products and services in organisations every day, and it also makes huge contributions to solving global issues and promoting systemic change.

This year, we want to examine how design research helps us better understand, shape and address systemic issues from the level of individual products and services, and organisation structures, through to societal challenges such as climate change and inequality.

We’ll be looking for presentations that tell stories of how design research contributes to positive change and helps solve big, hard problems.

We try to provide a place for experienced speakers and new presenters to share their ideas and work. Talks are selected from a pool of submissions from those in the design community. We will be looking for proposals that match the theme, or approach it in an innovative way.

All full-track speakers will be paid a speaker fee and receive one complimentary conference ticket.

All presentations will be streamed live, via Zoom.

What we looked for

The kinds of presentations we favour are experience-based and contain real-life stories and lessons. We want to know why you’re passionate about the topic and how you think your experiences will be meaningful to others.

The audience at Design Research is predominantly design researchers, market researchers, user researchers and UX designers.

In all proposals, we’re expecting:

  • Clarity of ideas - Focused ideas that are clearly and persuasively expressed in the summary pitch.
  • Real stories - Topics based on your demonstrable, practical experience.
  • Fresh perspectives - New and interesting insights beyond what we all discover in our first couple of years working.
  • Substance - Enough detail for us to get a clear idea of the presentation narrative and objectives.
  • Outcomes - Especially for workshops, we’re looking for clear outcomes and learning objectives.
