The art of interview

Interview is fundamental in design research. And yet, in the work we do, interview and conversation can be seen as interchangeable for findings rather than empathy, knowledge and insight.

This presentation will provide 10 heuristics to make your interviews more purposeful and truly understand the lives of people we are designing for/with. The talk moves beyond theory, with examples from the field and tips for making artful interviews part of your practice.

We present a frame for creating context and show how to embrace dialogic exchange. We turn phrase to nurture subjunctive mood and nourish emotional dialogue.

We demonstrate the value of laddering motivations to reveal insight and highlight the role of open questioning to help participants share storiesand establish narratives.

We provide some practical tools on how to observe and capture during interviews and in getting real!
