How to add mixed reality (VR & AR) to your UX toolbox
Full day workshop. Wednesday 9 August 2017, 9am – 5:00pm.
Description
You’ve no doubt seen a bunch of Augmented and Virtual Reality demos on YouTube. You might have even tried a few in real life. But how do you start creating experiences using these technologies?
The term Mixed Reality encompasses such a broad spectrum of very complex technologies and each require their own deep domain expertise. From a design perspective you need to mix these technologies to create user experiences that enable users to gain a greater understanding of a subject, but this is very challenging.
You need to move from a linear perspective to a spatial perspective and you need to be aware of real world constraints that can break your experience. Then you need to understand how the problem you are really trying to solve can be best be addressed using this new medium.
With Virtual and Augmented Realities increasingly becoming part of our day to day digital culture, this workshop provides a hands on introduction to these technologies. We’ll show you how you can start integrating them into your design solutions through prototyping as you work toward solving complex real world problems.
What you'll learn
- What the different technologies that make up “Mixed Reality” are
- What the real world constraints you will face today and tomorrow are
- How to apply the methodologies and approaches you already use today into this new medium
- Examples of new interaction models to support Mixed Reality experiences
- How to generate storyboards & prototypes that support both the spatial and “real world” environment of Mixed Reality
What you'll take away
Participants will take away a working or work-in-progress Mixed Reality web app with the ability to keep working on the app for 3 months after the workshop. They will also receive access to cheat sheets covering information covered during the introductory session and prototyping sketch templates.
Target audience
Any designer or business person with an interest in Augmented or Virtual Reality, looking to see how they can integrate them into their own personal UX toolbox.
