VicRoads case study: Bigger, better and responsive
Interested in responsive design? Richard and Jolanda will share the key insights they have gained over the last 12 months in redesigning and developing one of the most highly trafficked Victorian Government websites into a smart, responsive, engaging experience.
UX learnings have come from every stage of the project. As they revisit each phase Richard and Jolanda will talk about the dos and don’ts of responsive design based on the things they think they did well and the things they will now do differently. Some of the topics covered will include:
- Questions you should you ask your users and stakeholders during research
- The importance of collaboration with your developers and visual designers
- What needs to be in the functional specification and what doesn’t
- Understanding that your users’ needs fundamentally change across devices.
“Show me the interaction design!” we hear you shout at your screen. Well of course, they can’t present on responsive design without showing off the new website while grabbing the bottom right corner of the browser and moving it in and out. That’s half the fun when you first get to show it to the client. Seriously, the challenges of responsive design go well beyond the stacking order of screen components, so some of the design challenges they will cover include:
- Designing responsive navigation for a five level IA
- Customising the interaction to the device it is being viewed on
- Changing design patterns between break points,
The new VicRoads website will go live one month before the UX Australia conference, so the reference point for this presentation is one of the latest responsive websites to hit the Australian public. Audience members will take away some invaluable insights into responsive design.
