The dirty business of UX in hospitals

One of the biggest challenges facing hospitals today hospital associated infections (HAI). It is estimated there are over 200,000 HAIs each year in Australia, which result in prolonged hospital stays and increased costs to the health care sector and in some cases death.

Staff simply washing their hands can prevent the vast majority of these infections. So if the act of staff washing their hands can save lives why isn’t it happening?

Together with Southern Health Isobar have undertaken a UX design lead initiative to look at the different reasons for this behaviour and how it might be changed to improve the quality of care for patients at the hospital.

This talk will provide an inside look at how we researched the problem to uncover the true reasons behind why staff don’t wash their hands, how we then digested this research to create insights that drove the problem solving process.
