Prototype or die

Developing products and features that are instantly successful after their launch is the goal of any product manager, engineer, and user experience practitioner. Nobody wants to find out about missteps too far into the product development cycle, as adjustments quickly become expensive.

Prototyping to the rescue! Product managers get to dream big, innovate, and see their ideas brought to life; designers can quickly explore and refine multiple directions before development even begins; engineers can experiment with a working example; and usability study participants can provide meaningful input throughout the entire process. Deeply embedding prototyping into the product development cycle will result in more innovative products that are less likely to fail.

In this workshop, through presentations, demonstrations, as well as numerous hands-on exercises, we will provide insights about:

  • the benefits of prototyping
  • how to embed prototyping into the attendees’ product development cycles
  • how to define product questions that can be answered through prototyping
  • how to choose the ideal prototyping method and fidelity
  • how to actually prepare quick prototypes
  •  how to use those for usability testing and iteration

Besides numerous hands-on exercise that will allow the attendees to immediately apply their learnings to their own product design problems, the workshop will include many examples from our own work and opportunities for questions.

After this workshop, attendees will leave with a deep understanding of how to effectively include prototyping in their product development cycle.

Target audience

This workshop is for anyone who would like to learn about prototyping, or get better at doing it.

Take-away material

At the end of the workshop, the audience will be provided with a handout that summarizes the insights from the workshop. However, the most important takeaway will be the results of the exercises attendees were working on during the workshop.
