Making COTS information management products usable

This presentation will be a case study of how an Australian company took a commercial off the shelf product that has strong business rules embedded in it and engineered a simple and easy to use interfaces that better match the end user.

The case study will review the standard COTS product interfaces, and then explain how a UCD approach was employed to achieve a better user experience. The presenters will take attendees through the user research that was undertaken, the personas of the user base that were developed, how user experience professionals were employed, and then the resulting interfaces will be demonstrated.  

From this some key lessons will be extracted:  

  1. why commercial off the shelf products make excellent ‘engines’ for solutions, while specific interfaces to meet business needs can be developed to achieve the desired outcome  
  2. how a UCD design approach can achieve a great commercial outcome
