Usability testing Victoria’s new trains
In late 2017 we ran a large scale usability test to understand how the design of Victoria's new High Capacity Metro Trains would work in practice for passengers. We conducted the research utilising a full scale, high fidelity mock-up of a train carriage, and over the course of 4 hours had 87 passengers boarding, alighting and travelling on the (stationary) train while we videoed them and collected their feedback.
This is the story of that usability test and what we learnt along the way, from practical tips for dealing with testing on that scale to musings on the type of insight you can and can't get from that type of test.
