Dealing with the barriers to conducting qualitative research in Australian hospitals

Dealing with the barriers to conducting qualitative research in Australian hospitals.

Conducting qualitative research in hospitals is an integral part of designing and improving the environment of Australian hospitals. However, writing ethics applications and getting approvals to conduct this research is a process that often catches researchers off guard. It can be a lengthy process and can result in project timelines being pushed out which may result in costly delays.

This talk will take you through the possible barriers that may be faced when getting approval. It will explore:
- The processes that the research team need to go through in order to ensure their own and patients safety when conducting the research
- Some of the lessons learnt from conducting research in this context.

This talk will reflect on my experiences conducting research in a Sydney hospital and will be presented in the following three sections. 1. Gaining ethics approval, 2. Accessing the hospital environment and 3. Interviewing and observing patients. At the end of each section I will offer the audience tips that they can use when in the situation of researching in the hospital setting.
