Using design thinking to drive Agile planning

Half day workshop. Wednesday 27 August 2014, morning

Description

The role of designers is changing. The growing adoption of Agile development practices has created an opportunity for designers to take the lead. Design thinking skills allow us to take ideas and quickly turn them into clear product visions that put users first. By stepping up as project kick-off facilitators, designers can drive rapid, customer-centric product development and make stakeholder management far easier.

How do we transition from designing a vision into facilitating the creation of a product? How can we lead Agile teams from an idea to a plan? In this session, we’ll teach you how to run an Envisioning Workshop. We’ll sketch out a product blueprint, break it into deliverable features and prioritise them. And we’ll show you how to do it collaboratively in a way that harnesses the creativity and wisdom of your team.

What you’ll learn

Using a customer journey as a reference point, you’ll discover how you can refine a product vision and guide your team to break it down into features that can be mapped out in a clear order. You’ll learn how this visual clarity allows teams to discuss and prioritise features, whilst balancing customer and business value, technical complexity and the fabled minimum viable product.

Workshop structure

We’ll start by taking a business opportunity and setting a vision for its customer experience. With a target audience identified, we’ll map out a user journey, break it apart into challenges to be tackled, and map out a prioritised featureset. To finish, we’ll show you how these techniques can seamlessly transition into estimation and release planning.

Target audience

This workshop is for designers, engineers, and product managers seeking to practice efficient, customer-centric product development, build better communication, and foster collaboration in cross-functional product teams.

What you’ll take away

You’ll leave this workshop with:

  • A framework for running your own envisioning workshops
  • A copy of the slides
  • Copies of your product vision
