The essential elements of great design teams

Half day workshop. Wednesday 27 August 2014, morning

Description

Understanding how you and your team function together is a design skill that’s as valuable as choosing the right users to interview, or knowing how to use the tools. Your intentional engagement with your colleagues and clients can help you create the environment necessary to achieve your shared goals.

You don’t have to be an identified leader to lead your team. Wherever you are in your career journey, this workshop will help you gain an understanding of how you work, an appreciation of whom you’re designing with, and the tools to help you turn your focus to what you can design together.

What you’ll learn

In this workshop you will:

  • Develop skills that help you and your team perform better on your current and future design projects.
  • Gain an awareness of team member strengths, engagement styles, and design traits, so that you can assemble teams with complementary styles – or adapt when this isn’t an option.
  • Learn to recognise the potential underlying reasons of why people act out, and how you can respond constructively.
  • Cultivate the same level of appreciation and empathy for your colleagues as you have for your users.
  • Use experiential design techniques, intentional engagement, and self-reflection to discover, explore, and extend the strengths you bring to your team.

Workshop structure

This workshop combines principles, examples and group discussion.

Target audience

This workshop is appropriate for managers and “the managed”. Anyone who does UX work within a team, at any segment of their career, and who wishes to improve their ability to work with others, will benefit from this workshop.

What you’ll take away

You will receive the workshop slides and notes – and will be creating your own artifacts – timelines, reflections, and notes.
