New users matter too: The design of mobile first time user experiences

We know that first impressions count. A good first time experience for a new user establishes a foundation for future engagement, while a bad one can mean product abandonment. This window of opportunity is especially critical on mobile, given the short amount of time users spend per session. But because the first time user experience is often thought of as a small part of an app’s offering, it’s often difficult to get teams to focus a lot of energy on this moment in time.

What kind of first impression is your app giving?

This talk is for anyone who designs apps and wants to craft an onboarding experience that better engages and informs new users. While we’ll focus primarily on mobile, the information can also be applied to desktop applications or even emerging technologies. You’ll get an overview of best practices as they relate to learning and engagement, including patterns and antipatterns with examples distilled from my curation of first time user experiences. I’ll also suggest next steps you can take, regardless of whether you’re starting on a fresh new product or revising an existing one.
