Beyond digital: Applying UX skills beyond the realm of digital channels

Full day workshop. Wednesday 27 August 2014

Description

Organisations are turning to people with design sensibilities to inform and lead significant changes within their businesses. Many UX practitioners have just the type of skills organisations are looking for, but few appear comfortable with applying themselves to these new challenges.

Have you ever considered applying your UX skills at a more strategic level to the design of things that aren’t digital? If you’re curious about service design, interested in the more strategic application of your design skills, or just plain fed up with the constraints encountered when designing within a channel, this workshop is for you.

Iain Barker, co-founder and principal at Meld Studios, spent 13 years working in the design of digital things and has spent the last 7 years applying his UX skills to non-digital challenges. In this workshop he will draw on his experiences, provide guidance to help you get started on a similar journey and highlight the challenges you’re likely to face.

What you’ll learn

In this hands-on workshop you will:

  • Learn how to apply UX skills to non-digital challenges
  • Gain exposure to the range of skills and approaches you need to develop to work on non-digital design challenges
  • Learn about some of the key challenges facing UX designers who make this transition
  • Gain practical experience of observing and mapping service experiences
  • Gain practical experience of prototyping service experiences (no wireframes will be created during this activity)

Workshop structure

After an introduction to some principles and non-digital case studies, you’ll be guided through an example design activity for the rest of the day.

Target audience

Anyone who is curious about applying their skills beyond wireframes and digital things.
