Communicating concepts: Practice through dissection

Description

UX designers need to continually develop their ability to communicate concepts quickly, whether they are product, service, or business concepts. However, it’s difficult to hone these skills on one’s own project. Deadline pressures, project history, and the need to ‘get it right’ all make it difficult to practice objectively. The best way to improve concept communication skills is by sketching existing concepts. When the pressure is off, the UX designer can focus squarely on technique and improve their skills.

This workshop gives attendees tools to hone their skills of quickly communicating concepts. They’ll learn how to break down somebody else’s concept into its core elements, and then sketch that concept
with simple diagrams.

Workshop structure

After reviewing principles of sketching concepts, attendees will break into small groups. They’ll be given examples to work with and will work together to decipher and communicate the core concept of each.

Then we’ll add another layer of business models, revenue models, or product strategy. Teams will evolve one of their previous exercises by adding on these extra layers.

Target audience

Designers who spend time translating research into basic concepts will benefit greatly from this workshop. In particular, designers who work on complex projects that blend products and services will benefit from these tools to help them communicate their ideas simply.
