The Contemporary Practice of Design - a look at the potential for design over the coming decade

It's been a decade since Steve outlined the progression of design practice from the interface out to the system in his Core77 essay "The Strategic Arc of Interaction Design". Since that time we have seen design practitioners undertake increasingly strategic challenges, branching out into areas of public policy and service delivery; the built environment and public infrastructure; and adopting the tools and mindsets of systems design to better understand and tackle complex issues in our society.

The coming decade affords us, and Design at large, with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reset the relationship between our communities and our governments; between our institutions and people; between companies and the natural environment. To create a society that is more equitable, more sustainable, and more just.

In this presentation Steve will look ahead over the coming decade towards 2030, drawing on recent essays and project work to identify trends in design and how these will shape our work over the next ten years.
