Three strategies for growing experience in your team

Every design team faces the problem of how to grow experience, particularly as the team scales up.

There are three basic strategies, each with it's own benefits and risks. Which strategy is right for your team?

The first strategy is growing talent from within. Whilst this is a low risk strategy, with junior people providing value as they grow, this is a slow path if your overall team is growing quickly and there are risks associated with accelerating the growth of individuals.
The second strategy is to hire senior practitioners. Whilst this gets you relevant experience, fast, the challenge is to maintain cultural alignment and common methodology.

The third, often overlooked, strategy is to hire experienced people from outside of your team's domain then cross-train them in your methodologies. This strategy has the advantage of broadening the experience in your team although there are potentially financial and commercial risks if this strategy is poorly executed.

We will present these strategies and discuss the benefits, risks and success factors for each. We will discuss how to decide which ones to choose based on your particular needs.
