The truth doesn’t cost anything. But a lie could cost you everything.

Do you know when participants are lying to you?

Is there anything you can do to uncover the truth?

I can guarantee that as a UX researcher or tester who has conducted interviews, test sessions and especially focus groups you would have participants who have lied to you. Why do users lie to us when we are trying to help create a better user experience for them?

This presentation will discuss some of the reasons that participants lie during research, how to detect when people are lying and most importantly, how to cut through the BS and uncover the truth. I will talk about how to design your research approach and questions as well as some tools that you can use to encourage honest answers and accurate insights. I will also talk about the different roles you have to master to be a good researcher and how to gain true and accurate insights from your participants when conducting research sessions.

I will share a real life case study with you: a government client who wanted us to design the user experience for a paper based survey that was to be digitised. Hear about what users lied about, both in the survey and to us as researchers, how we cut through the lies, and how we applied the knowledge to the design of the survey.
